Agrifresh RR: Optimization of the microclimate for high-quality blueberries
15 May 2026 – Agralia News
Agrifresh RR incorporates microparticles of microencapsulated aluminum in HDPE, which diffuse light and modulate temperature. This improves light distribution within the canopy and creates a more stable microclimate, reducing thermal peaks and water stress.
Agrifresh RR Technology for Optimal Growing Conditions
Blueberry production under conditions of high radiation and temperature requires precise microclimate management to maximize photosynthesis without causing heat stress, photoinhibition, or fruit dehydration. The Agrifresh RR mesh, developed and patented by Agralia Group, combines technological innovation and field results, offering an optimal environment for cultivation.
Improvement of Water Balance and Reduction of PVL
The blueberry trial compared an untreated control without netting (T0) against Agrifresh RR (T1), evaluating microclimate, physiology, and productivity. One of the most relevant results was the vapor pressure deficit (VPD), a key indicator of water balance: the lower the VPD, the lower the transpiration and water stress. Under Agrifresh RR, the VPD at 20 cm from the leaf decreased from 1.6–2.0 kPa to 1.1–1.4 kPa, favoring partial stomatal closure, better turgor, and less fruit dehydration.
Physiological Impact of Energy Redistribution
These changes explain the redistribution of energy in the plant: more towards maintenance and fruit retention and less towards individual growth. This modification in resource allocation is directly reflected in productive behavior. As a result, the tested variety showed:
In conclusion, Agrifresh RR does not act only as shading, but as an advanced microclimate management system, reducing VPD, modulating temperature, and increasing diffuse light. This allows for higher yield, better quality, and longer-lasting fruits, demonstrating that protecting is not blocking light, but optimizing the plant’s physiology.
